Massachusetts Medical Society: Massachusetts Medical Society on SCOTUS decision on affirmative action

Massachusetts Medical Society on SCOTUS decision on affirmative action

Today’s decision by the Supreme Court is disheartening and raises concern about the future of equity and opportunity in medical education, as it threatens to undermine the efforts of the medical community to address racial disparities in health care access and outcomes. Despite this decision, the Massachusetts Medical Society will continue to push forward with our commitment to minimizing health disparities and promoting equity across the heath care spectrum. The Medical Society stands behind our Principles to Achieve Racial Equity, work that will help to enrich medical education and the physician community. We will continue to take a leadership role in efforts to enhance diversity in the physician workforce, including advocating for the elimination of legacy admissions to medical schools and engaging in broad-based efforts that involve partners within and beyond the medical profession and medical education community.

-Barbara S. Spivak, MD, President, Massachusetts Medical Society
