The Massachusetts Medical Society is an
organization that champions a physician-led team approach to patient
care. We count our state’s talented and compassionate nurses as
invaluable and trusted partners in delivering that care. The Medical
Society is pleased that the outcome of the nurse-staffing ratio ballot
question will ensure that the dedicated physicians, nurses and
clinicians who together work to provide safe and effective patient care
will retain the level of authority necessary to make vital staffing
decisions in the best interests of our patients. We acknowledge that
the discussion of the availability and deployment of patient-facing
resources was one that needed to occur and one that cannot end. The
physicians of the Medical Society remain committed to being a
participant in those conversations and, ultimately, part of
patient-centered solutions that result in optimal outcomes and optimal
value for our patients, our nurse colleagues and our physicians.
