Massachusetts Medical Society: Massachusetts physician groups on Executive Order relating to childhood vaccines

Massachusetts physician groups on Executive Order relating to childhood vaccines

The science supporting childhood immunization has not changed, and neither has the position of Massachusetts physician organizations. We continue to recommend that families follow the American Academy of Pediatrics' childhood immunization schedule, which reflects decades of rigorous, peer-reviewed evidence demonstrating the safety and effectiveness of vaccines.

The changes outlined in this executive order depart from the established body of scientific and medical evidence and risk weakening protection against serious preventable illness. This is particularly concerning as vaccine-preventable diseases like measles have recently resurged in communities with declining vaccination rates. Consistent, evidence-based standards have long been central to protecting individual and public health.

Families should know that vaccines recommended here in Massachusetts remain available, including those required for the upcoming school year, at no cost regardless of insurance status. We support the continued leadership of Massachusetts public health officials in providing evidence-based vaccine guidance and ensuring that children and families can access recommended immunizations.

We are also concerned that the rapidly changing federal guidance is creating confusion for families. We strongly encourage parents and caregivers with questions to talk with their child’s doctor or another trusted health care professional. Physicians are committed to helping families make informed decisions about vaccination based on the best available medical evidence.

Our organizations will continue to advocate for vaccine policy that is grounded in science, protects access to recommended immunizations, and supports the health and well-being of every child and family in the Commonwealth.
