WALTHAM
– Dr. Lynda Young, a Worcester resident, has been honored by the
Massachusetts Medical Society with its 2019 Henry Ingersoll Bowditch
Award for Excellence in Public Health.
One
of the medical society’s most prestigious awards, the Ingersoll
Bowditch is awarded annually to a Massachusetts physician who
demonstrates creativity, commendable citizenship, initiative,
innovation and leadership in the public health and advocacy fields.
Young
has received numerous recognitions for her civic activities from
several groups, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Pernet
Family Health Service, the YWCA of Central
Massachusetts, the Montachusett Girl Scout Council, the State
University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine, and the City of
Worcester’s Advisory Committee on the Status of Women.
“Lynda
is a passionate and effective advocate, especially on behalf of the
most vulnerable, speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves,”
colleague Dr. James Broadhurst said.
“In particular, her efforts to protect equitable health care coverage
for children, reduce health disparities by shaping policies that
acknowledge the social determinants of health, and prevent young people
from becoming addicted to tobacco have had resounding
impact. Lynda also works hard to encourage her fellow clinicians and
students to be engaged with their communities and to be active
participants in public policy formation.”
Young is a past member of the Worcester Board of Health and past president of the Massachusetts Medical Society.
Young
established Chandler Pediatrics and was chair of the Division of
Community Pediatrics at the University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical
Center. She received her medical degree
from the State University of New York at Buffalo and is a fellow of the
American academy of Pediatrics.
