WALTHAM – Dr. Maryanne C. Bombaugh, MSc, MBA, CPE, FACOG, past president of the Massachusetts Medical Society, a gynecologist at the Community Health Center of Cape Cod and a United States Army veteran, has been honored by the Massachusetts Medical Society as the 2022 recipient of its Award for Distinguished Service.

Bombaugh served as Associate Medical Director for Quality at the Steward Health Network, director for Centene Corporation and Coverys, and as Medical Director for Quality and Executive Medical Director for Population Health at Reliant Medical Group. She currently works with the Betsy Lehman Center and the Massachusetts Healthcare Safety and Quality Consortium on its executive committee and consortium and serves as a director on the MA Coalition for the Prevention of Medical Errors. She recently served the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) on its Improving Health and Health Care Task Force.

The honor, one of the most prestigious given by the Society to one of its members, is awarded each year to a physician who has made significant contributions to the goals of the organization through demonstrated leadership, member recruitment, and committee work.

Bombaugh was president of the medical society at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and emerged as a leading national voice in calling attention to and pushing to correct the dangers of personal protective equipment scarcity.

“Dr. Bombaugh’s pro-active, inclusive leadership during Massachusetts’ COVID-19 outbreak proved how well-matched she was, to drive statewide policies for health equity, anti-racism, and physician protections,” Dr. Patricia R. Falcao said. “Dr. Bombaugh rapidly convened an MMS Presidential Advisory Group, leading coordination of timely membership and organizational expertise in Emergency Preparedness, while leading MMS’ expanded multimedia communications outreach, inter-agency collaborations, ongoing membership updates, physician wellness supports, and ensuring important patient and physician data-driven collaboration on the Governor’s Council for Re-opening.”

Bombaugh’s service to the organization also includes company officer and chair of the board of trustees, state delegate to the American Medical Association (AMA) and member on the AMA Council on Legislation, member on the Committee on Women in Medicine, the Committee on Diversity, the Committee on Strategic Planning, Committee on the Quality of Medical Practice, the Finance Committee and task forces on Opioids and Physician Wellness. She is a previous chair and member of the organization’s Committee on Legislation and is a current advisor to that committee.

During Bombaugh’s term as president, the MMS became the first medical society in the nation to affirm by organizational policy that enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health, in all its dimensions, including health care, is a basic human right.

Dr. Bombaugh grew up in Framingham, Mass. She received her undergraduate degree from Smith College and her medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center Long Medical School in San Antonio. TX. She received advanced degrees from the schools of Public Health and Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and earned physician executive certification from the American Association of Physician Leadership.
