Maryanne C. Bombaugh, MD, appointed Chair of Massachusetts Medical Society and Alliance Charitable Foundation Board of Directors

WALTHAM — The Massachusetts Medical Society and Alliance Charitable Foundation (Foundation) is pleased to announce the appointment of Maryanne C. Bombaugh, MD, MSc, MBA, CPE, FACOG, as Chair of its Board of Directors. Dr. Bombaugh was appointed by the Massachusetts Medical Society Board of Trustees at its June 24, 2026, meeting.

An obstetrician-gynecologist, health care executive, and nationally recognized physician leader, Dr. Bombaugh brings extensive experience in health policy, quality and patient safety, organizational leadership, and nonprofit governance.

“We are delighted to welcome Dr. Bombaugh as Chair,” said Ted Calianos, MD, MMS Executive Vice President/Chief Executive Officer. “Her commitment to patients and communities and her exceptional record of physician leadership will be invaluable as the Foundation works to expand access to care and improve health and well-being.”

A past president of the Massachusetts Medical Society and current Massachusetts delegate to the American Medical Association (AMA), Dr. Bombaugh serves as Chair of the AMA Council on Legislation and two national task forces focused on preserving the patient-physician relationship and reforming health care. She also practices obstetrics and gynecology at the Community Health Center of Cape Cod.

Dr. Bombaugh previously held executive leadership positions in population health, quality, and patient safety at Reliant Medical Group and Steward Health Care Network. Her board service includes Coverys, Centene, the Massachusetts Medical Society, and the Massachusetts Coalition for the Prevention of Medical Errors.

Her honors include the MMS Women’s Leadership Award, Award for Distinguished Service to the Massachusetts Medical Society, and Barnstable District Medical Society Community Clinician of the Year Award. A veteran of the U.S. Army Medical Corps, Dr. Bombaugh completed her military service as Division Chief of Gynecology and Director of Safety and Quality at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

“I am honored to serve as Chair and look forward to working with the Board and our partners to advance the Foundation’s strategic plan, strengthen our impact, and expand access to care across Massachusetts,” Dr. Bombaugh said.

Through grantmaking and philanthropic partnerships, the MMSA Charitable Foundation supports programs that expand access to care and advance the charitable and educational mission of the Massachusetts Medical Society.
