The MMS Committee on the Quality of Medical Practice has recently reviewed and updated our Office-Based Surgery Guidelines.
The purpose of these guidelines is to promote patient safety in the non-hospital setting during procedures that require the administration of local anesthesia, conscious sedation, deep sedation, general anesthesia, or minor or major conduction blockade.
Moreover, these guidelines have been developed to provide practitioners performing office-based procedures requiring anesthesia the benefit of uniform professional guidelines regarding qualification of practitioners and staff, equipment, facilities,
and policies and procedures for patient assessment and monitoring. The guidelines will be updated periodically as appropriate.
Nothing in these guidelines shall supercede the "Rules and Regulations for the Administration of General Anesthesia, Deep Sedation, Conscious Sedation, and Nitrous Oxide Sedation" of the Board of Dentistry (CMR 234-3.00) for those practitioners and facilities
that qualify for regulation by the Board of Dentistry.
