Waltham, Mass. – January 19 -- Jeffrey W. Blake, M.D. of Sheffield has been honored by the Massachusetts Medical Society as the 2016 recipient of its Senior Volunteer Physician of the Year Award.  The honor recognizes a senior member of the society who has shown a dedicated commitment to volunteerism and to sharing medical experience and expertise. He will receive the award at the Society’s Board of Trustees Meeting in June.

Dr. Blake is one of the founding members of Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) Berkshires in Great Barrington. He has served on its Board of Trustees for 11 years and has been instrumental in its growth since it was established in 2004.  Over the last dozen years, he has volunteered more than 3,500 hours of direct patient care, and for six years, he served as Co-Medical Director of VIM.

Dr. Blake has also served on the organization’s Quality Improvement/Quality Assurance Committee, is currently a member of its Clinical Services Committee, and volunteers seven to eight clinical hours each week caring for patients. He also played a key role in developing VIM’s first Shared Medical Appointment pilot program, where patients with the same diagnosis meet at one time to see the provider; get ancillary information, treatment and education about their particular disease; and share their experiences with each other.

A graduate of Columbia University with a B.A. and the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons with an M.D., Dr. Blake is board-certified in internal medicine and cardiology. He is a Fellow of both the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Nuclear Cardiology. From 1981-1997, he served as the Director of Nuclear Cardiology at the Westchester County (N.Y.) Medical Center.
