Waltham – March 14 – Peter M. Barker, M.D. has been honored by his physician peers of the Essex South District Medical Society as the district’s 2016 Community Clinician of the Year.  He will receive the award at the district’s annual meeting on April 12 at the Danversport Yacht Club in Danvers. 

The award was established in 1998 by the Massachusetts Medical Society to recognize a physician from each of the Society’s 20 district medical societies who has made significant contributions to his or her patients and the community.  The Essex South District Medical Society, one of 20 district societies that are part of the Massachusetts Medical Society, has nearly 700 physician members who work or live in the communities of southern Essex County.  

Board certified in family medicine with a certification in geriatrics, Dr. Barker has been serving patients on the North Shore for more than 30 years.  From 1984-1992, he was in solo practice in Swampscott, and since 1993 has been the Medical Director of Family Doctors, also in Swampscott.  From 1990-1995, he served as Chief of the Family Practice Department at Union Hospital and then, from 1995-2005, he served as the first Chief of the Family Practice Department at Salem Hospital.

Dr. Barker received his bachelor’s degree with honors from Stanford University and earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He resides in Swampscott.
