James S. Gessner, MD, President of the Massachusetts Medical Society, released the following statement:
“The
Massachusetts Medical Society thanks the members of the Massachusetts
House delegation for their leadership in opposing the
American Health Care Act. Without question, this bill would have been
harmful to our patients – including the most vulnerable – and to our
members’ ability to provide them quality care.
“In
Massachusetts and elsewhere, this legislation would have deprived
members of our community of the subsidies that make health
insurance affordable; would have ended the Medicaid expansion that has
helped so many; would have overturned mandatory coverage of essential
health benefits; and would have resulted in children, seniors, pregnant
women and other underserved patients losing
access to essential health care services.
“Now, we ask Congress to allow the Affordable Care Act to continue to provide health coverage to more than 20 million Americans,
including record numbers of covered patients in Massachusetts.
“On behalf our patients and physician members, we thank our Congressional delegation for their support.”
