WALTHAM - Dr. Jay Schachne, the former chief of
cardiology at Southcoast Physicians Group and founder of Truesdale Cardiology,
has been selected as the Bristol South District Medical Society 2018 Community
Clinician of the Year, an award recognizing his professionalism and
contributions as a physician.
Schachne was
presented the award at the district’s Annual Spring meeting April 3, where
Dr. Schachne was lauded by his peers for his
long-term service to his patients, his hospital, and the community, including
his outstanding work with the Katie Brown Foundation (KBEP).
A graduate of
New York Medical College, Schachne completed his residency in internal medicine
at Danbury Hospital in Danbury, Conn., and a fellowship in cardiology at the
Brown-affiliated Hospital Program in Providence, R.I. He is a clinical
assistant professor of medicine at the Alpert Medical School at Brown
University. He is board-certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular
disease.
A
cardiologist for 35 years, Schachne said he was honored to receive the
prestigious award and referenced the strides that he and the team at the Katie
Brown Educational Program are taking to aid in preventing relationship
violence.
Founded in 2001 in response to the murder of 20-year-old
Katherine “Katie” Brown by the man she had dated on and off since high school,
KBEP teaches students in grades four through high school, and adults throughout
Massachusetts and Rhode Island the necessary skills to promote healthy
relationships and prevent relationship violence from occurring.
To date, the program has reached more than 90,000 children
and an independent study
done by Brown University showed that the program creates positive attitudes and
reduces relationship violence in the children who receive it.
The Community
Clinician of the Year Award was established in 1998 by the Massachusetts
Medical Society to recognize a physician from each of the organization’s 20
district societies who has made significant contributions to his or her
patients and the community.
The Massachusetts Medical
Society (MMS) is the statewide professional association for physicians and

on physician practice management, and addresses issues of physician well-being.
Under the auspices of the NEJM Group, the MMS extends our mission globally by
advancing medical knowledge from research to patient care through the New England Journal of Medicine, NEJM
Catalyst, and the NEJM Journal Watch family of specialty publications, and
through our education products for health care professionals: NEJM Knowledge+,
