WALTHAM – Dr. Richard B. Wolk of
Lexington has been honored by the Massachusetts Medical Society as the 2018
recipient of its Senior Volunteer Physician of the Year Award, an honor that recognizes
a senior member of the Medical Society who has shown a dedicated commitment to
volunteerism and to sharing medical experience and expertise.
Dr. Wolk has been a
volunteer with the MetroWest Free Medical Program (MWFMP) for 11 years, where
he spends most of his Tuesday evenings caring for uninsured and underinsured
patients. In his volunteer role, Wolk conducts school and work physicals, sees
patients in need of medication refills and provides counsel and guidance to
patients who need to undergo further testing and treatment.
Dr. Wolk serves on the
MWFMP’s board of directors and was instrumental in fostering partnership
activities with MetroWest Medical Center and MetroWest Radiology Associates
that brought no-cost or low-cost services to patients at MWFMP.
From 1969-2005, Dr. Wolk
practiced radiology at MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham. From 1987-2001,
he founded and served as president of Mobile Diagnostics, a not-for-profit
mobile mammography service that travelled the Commonwealth and provided
screening service to hundreds of medically underserved women.
A graduate of Harvard College and the
Tufts University School of Medicine, Wolk has been a member of the
Massachusetts Medical Society’s Committee on Senior Volunteer Physicians from 2008
- 2017.
