Question:
When working with older patients in diabetes management, consider the progressive restriction of homeostatic reserve. With increasing age, there is a decrease in the physiological reserve which allows one to maintain homeostasis in the presence of environmental, physiological, or emotional stress. There is a physiological limit beyond which homeostasis cannot be restored. Stressors such as trauma, illness, and medications may impact the overall health, resulting in poor outcomes.
