Massachusetts Medical Society: President's Message: Recognizing and Celebrating Women in Medicine

President's Message: Recognizing and Celebrating Women in Medicine

Maryanne Bombaugh, MD, MSc, MBA, FACOG

Dear friends and colleagues,

I hope that you had an enjoyable summer and took some time to relax.

September is Women in Medicine Month and it has become an MMS tradition to dedicate our first autumn issue to 42 percent of the practicing physicians in Massachusetts and more than half of the state’s medical school students.

We take great pride and pleasure as women physicians in supporting other women physicians, including mentoring younger colleagues and medical students to help create more opportunities for women professionally and in leadership.

In this issue, you’ll meet some Massachusetts women physicians who are role models. They share their experiences of taking on prominent leadership positions with some of the most respected health care organizations in our state. We will also introduce you to women who have been selected by the Medical Society as winners of prestigious awards, including the Woman Physician Leadership Award.

We’re pleased to mail this issue to nonmember women physicians in the Commonwealth as well, as a way to inform them about the ways the MMS supports and celebrates our female colleagues.

It is our hope that sharing our stories will unite and inspire us all to continue to build a diverse health care environment in which our shared successes will translate into optimal patient care, professional satisfaction, and a thriving future.

All my best,

— Maryanne C. Bombaugh, MD, MSc, MBA, FACOG
