Gun violence hurts and kills our patients and harms our communities. It has led to too many unfathomably difficult conversations with people whose child, sibling, spouse, parent, or best friend were hurt or killed.
We will continue to work tirelessly for change to eliminate gun violence on our patients’ behalf. We will push our elected leaders to immediately support mandatory background checks for all gun purchases and for expansion of public health research into the causes and prevention of gun violence. We will continue to speak with our patients about firearm safety and we will continue to educate our colleagues on the best ways to initiate and to have those conversations.
The Massachusetts Medical Society recognizes the leadership of the Massachusetts congressional delegation for their efforts in addressing this public health crisis. We remind the Senate that legislative action on gun violence can save our patients’ lives and cannot wait.
