Dr. Olivia C. Liao
Dear Colleagues,
As we begin a new year, I’m happy to share the January/February issue of Vital Signs with you. This issue brings together timely stories that speak to the realities of today’s practice environment, along with opportunities that point toward what’s
ahead.
In “Relax, It’s Going to Work Out,” Dr. Robert Gagnon reflects on what he wishes he knew when opening his own
family medicine practice. His candid perspective reminds us that many of our fears diminish with time, preparation, and trust in our purpose and skill as physicians.
In “Cannabis-Induced Psychosis: Recognition and Assessment in a Changing Landscape,” Dr. Donald Rice and Dr. Amy
Turncliff examine the increasing incidence of psychosis linked to high-potency cannabis products.
Looking toward the future, “Navigating the Future of Health Care” highlights
the Massachusetts Medical Society’s 2026 Future Health Best: Practices for Advancing Care Conference on Saturday, March 21, in Waltham, MA. At a moment marked by workforce strain, rapid technological change, and policy uncertainty, this
gathering will bring together physicians and health care leaders for thoughtful dialogue and practical solutions. We are especially honored to welcome Dr. Ashish K. Jha as the conference’s keynote speaker.
Finally, we share news of
MMS Business Essentials for Health Care Professionals, a new 10-week master management certificate program developed in partnership with GoalMakers. Designed specifically for physicians and health care professionals, this program offers
practical business education without the time or financial commitment of a traditional MBA — equipping participants with tools to lead confidently in today’s complex practice environment.
I hope you find this issue both informative and encouraging as we move into the year ahead.
With appreciation for all that you do,
Olivia C. Liao, MD, FACS
