Dear Colleagues,

As medicine continues to evolve, we face challenges and opportunities as physicians to rethink how we practice, lead, and care for our patients. In this issue of Vital Signs, we highlight several ways physicians are navigating that change.

In “Rethinking the Traditional Model: Exploring Alternative Career Paths in Medicine,” we examine how physicians have reimagined sustainable practice models, including lifestyle medicine, direct care, and other innovative approaches. Complementing this theme, “Beyond the Bedside: A Primer for Aspiring Startup Chief Medical Officers” explores physician leadership opportunities within emerging health care companies.

Drs. Janet Limke and Cheryl Warner review the growing evidence linking certain ultra-processed foods to chronic disease and emphasize practical strategies for healthier eating in “Understanding Ultra-Processed Foods: What They Are and Why They Matter.”

This issue also highlights the Massachusetts Medical Society’s ongoing advocacy efforts. “Progress on Prior Authorization: What Physicians Need to Know” outlines proposed reforms aimed at reducing administrative burden and improving timely access to care.

Finally, in “Implementing a Nationwide Learning Health System in the United States: Challenges, Progress, and the Path Forward,” the 136th Annual Shattuck Lecture will explore how such a system could accelerate innovation and improve health outcomes.

I hope you enjoy this issue and the many ways physicians are helping shape the future of medicine.

Sincerely,

Olivia C. Liao, MD, FACS
