The Committee on Senior Volunteer Physicians is pleased to offer a unique and rewarding volunteer opportunity available to physicians that are interested in serving as mentors to medical students.
Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) is looking for physicians to volunteer as facilitators for the Integrated Programs (IP) course next fall. The IP course is a problems-based learning course required for all first- and second-year medical students.
For over 15 years the Committee on Senior Volunteer Physicians has hosted an orientation session for interested volunteers. In this session Dr Megan Young, course director, will introduce you to the program, provide details of the facilitator’s role and scheduling, and answer any question you may have.
The facilitator position is an opportunity to help guide the students to making the correct diagnoses as they integrate information from other classes and independent study groups. The facilitators guide and answer questions as needed; however they are not teachers in the traditional sense. Share you valuable medical experience and expertise as you observe the students’ clinical reasoning skills develop. The volunteer meets at BUSM with small groups of six to eight students for two hours each week for from September to November. Tentative dates include Wednesday or Friday afternoons from 1:00 – 2:50 p.m.
The orientation and training session will be held at MMS Headquarters in Waltham on Wednesday, June 10 from 9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Lunch will be served. Even if you are not sure yet that you will be able to commit, all are welcome to attend.
To register to attend the information session, please contact Carolyn Maher at cmaher@mms.org, or 781-434-7311.
