WALTHAM – Dr. Lorraine M. Schratz, a Franklin resident and pediatric
cardiologist with Child Heart Associates, caring for patients in Yarmouthport,
Milford, and Worcester, has been selected as the Bristol North District Medical
Society’s 2018 Community Clinician of the Year, an award recognizing her
professionalism and contributions as a physician.
Dr. Schratz was presented the award at the district’s annual
spring meeting, which was held on April 3 at the Venus de Milo in Swansea.
Schratz, who graduated from Union College and attended the
Albany Medical College as part of their accelerated medical education program,
was nominated for the Community Clinician of the Year award by colleague Dr.Eric
Ruby, a pediatrician in Taunton.
Schratz completed her training at Cincinnati Children’s
Hospital, where she was awarded an AHA grant for her fellowship work with
intracoronary ultrasound. She worked at Georgetown University and at Children’s
National Medical Center, participating in clinical research and contributing a
chapter to Fetal Cardiology.
Since moving to Massachusetts, Schratz has focused on
community pediatric cardiology, but has always enjoyed direct patient care the
most. She is the pediatric cardiologist at the Pappas Rehabilitation Hospital
for Children, serving as co-chair of the Ethics Committee and on the Peer
Review and Credentials Committees.
Schratz is currently the vice president for the Bristol
North District, a MMS delegate and is on the society’s Committee on
Legislation. She has attended the American Medical Association’s National
Advocacy Conference, the MMS Advocacy Day on Beacon Hill, and has also gone on
her own to speak to state legislators to advocate for the betterment of public
health.
Active in her community, Schratz serves on the Parish
Pastoral Council for St. Mary’s Church, Franklin, where she is a CCD teacher
and active in the Baptismal Preparation Ministry. She has recently begun
volunteering at St. Anne’s Free Clinic in Shrewsbury.
Together with her husband, Regis, she has been actively
raising five children (ages 13 – 23 years), supporting them in their activities
in athletics, Scouts, and theatre at Franklin High School and the Hockomock
Area YMCA.
The Community Clinician of the Year Award was established in
1998 by the Massachusetts Medical Society to recognize a physician from each of
the organization’s 20 district societies who has made significant contributions
to his or her patients and the community.
