Intimate Partner Violence Course
Intimate partner violence (IPV) can occur in any relationship - married or unmarried, living together or apart, and in heterosexual or same sex couples. In August 2014, a comprehensive domestic violence bill became law in Massachusetts. Chapter 260 of the Acts of 2014 provides new legal protections for victims, brings new criminal offenses, and imposes training for a wide variety of professionals including physicians, nurses, other healthcare providers, police and judges.
This online course is designed to incorporate the training necessary to appropriately identify, screen, treat and refer victims of domestic violence and sexual violence, including the physiological and psychological symptoms and effects of IPV, including children who witness abuse, the challenges of the LGBTQ community, and the pathology of offenders.
Learning Objectives:
- Summarize the incidence, prevalence, spectrum, and dynamics of Partner Violence (IPV) and Sexual Violence (SV).
- Describe the constellation of physiological and psychological manifestations and health effects of IPV and SV
- Examine the behavioral dynamics of coercive control most commonly seen in offenders.
- Identify the particular challenges faced by abused individuals who are adolescents; elderly; immigrants; low income; minority; non-English speaking; or who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered.
- Articulate the effects on children who are exposed to or witness IPV or SV.
- Explain the principles of trauma-informed care.
- Illustrate how to inquire routinely about violence and abuse.
- Review the provisions of the Affordable Care Act that pertain to IPV and SV inquiry and care.
- Document patient disclosure and relevant physical findings in the medical record
