Maryanne C. Bombaugh, MD, MSc, MBA, FACOG

Maryanne C. Bombaugh, MD, MSc, MBA, FACOG (University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio; residency: Walter Reed Army Medical Center), was appointed to the American Board of Medical Specialties’ Advancing Practice Task Force. With the other task force members, Dr. Bombaugh will research and identify practice environment changes necessary to support educational activities that can advance clinical practice and further physician learning. Dr. Bombaugh, president of the Massachusetts Medical Society and past president of the Massachusetts Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, is a gynecologist at the Community Health Center of Cape Cod.

Rohn S. Friedman, MD

Rohn S. Friedman, MD (Harvard Medical School, 1978; residency: New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center), received the 2019 Advancement of the Profession award at the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society (MPS) annual meeting. Dr. Friedman was recognized for his writing on patient evaluation and treatment in emergency situations and in consultation-liaison psychiatry, as well as his mentorship of faculty, residents, and medical students. Dr. Friedman, a past president of the MPS, is vice chair of the Department of Psychiatry at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital and associate professor of psychiatry (part-time) at Harvard Medical School.

Annekathryn Goodman, MD, MPH

Annekathryn Goodman, MD, MPH (Tufts University School of Medicine, 1983; residency: Tufts Medical Center), received the Vincent Award of Distinction for Outstanding Contributions in Women’s Healthcare from the Vincent Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at MGH. The award honored Dr. Goodman for her 30 years of service promoting women’s health care and contributions to the field. Dr. Goodman is director of the MGH Center for Global Health Program against Gender-Based Violence and codirector of MGH Women’s Global Health.

Ole-Petter R. Hamnvik, MB BCh BAO, MMSc

Ole-Petter R. Hamnvik, MB BCh BAO, MMSc (Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, 2005; residency: Brigham and Women’s Hospital), was appointed to the American Board of Medical Specialties’ Remediation Task Force. The team will help those facing or dealing with certificate loss by outlining specialty-specific pathways for remediation or re-entry. Dr. Hamnvik is program director of the Endocrinology Fellowship at BWH, assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, and NEJM education editor.

John A. Renner Jr., MD

John A. Renner Jr., MD (Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, 1964; residency: Tufts Medical Center), won the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society’s 2019 Lifetime Achievement award. Dr. Renner has written and lectured extensively on the treatment of alcoholism and drug addiction. Dr. Renner is former president of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, former chair of the Council on Addiction Psychiatry of the American Psychiatric Association, and professor of psychiatry at Boston University School of Medicine. He also directs the VA Boston Healthcare System outpatient addiction treatment program and the joint BU/VA Boston Addiction Psychiatry Residency program.

Assaad J. Sayah, MD

Assaad J. Sayah, MD (University of Massachusetts Medical School, 1987; residency: William Beaumont Hospital), was named interim chief executive officer of Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA). Dr. Sayah has served as chief medical officer since 2013 and was previously chief of emergency medicine and senior vice president of primary care at CHA. Dr. Sayah has led innovative programs at all three CHA hospitals, resulting in enhanced efficiency, quality, volume, and patient satisfaction.

Andrew J. Synn, MD

Andrew J. Synn, MD (Harvard Medical School, 2010; residency: Brigham and Women’s Hospital), won the Morton M. Ziskind Clinical Research Scholar Award at the 2019 American Thoracic Society International Conference. The Ziskind award is given to promising pulmonary and critical care fellows engaged in clinical research. Dr. Synn’s research focuses on vascular imaging in lung disease and is supported by a National Service Research Award from the National Institutes of Health and a Catalyst Award from the American Lung Association. Dr. Synn is a fellow in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
