State
law requires that all Massachusetts prescribers query the state Prescription
Monitoring Program (PMP) database prior to every prescription for a Schedule II
or III narcotic medication or a benzodiazepine.
Creating an Account in MassPAT
All prescribers in Massachusetts must create a new account with this new system (even if you have an account in the current PMP), and can presently create this new required account by accessing the MassPAT website at:
https://massachusetts.pmpaware.net/login, and doing the following:
- Click “Create an Account”
- When creating an account, use your professional email address as your username.
- You will need to following credential to create your MassPAT account:
- Federal DEA number
- Professional License or Board Number
- Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration (MCSR) – During registration, please enter your MCSR# in the “Controlled Substances ID” field
- Once you have submitted your credential on this website, you will have access to your MassPAT dashboard. (Please note: You will not be able to conduct patient searches in MassPAT until August 22, 2016.)

Delegates, Residents and Interns
Residents and Interns are encouraged to create an account here by indicating the primary account holder, usually the Residency Program Director, under whom they will access MassPAT. They will not be able to create an account until the primary account holder has created one. Delegates: MassPAT allows non-prescribers to access MassPAT on behalf of enrolled prescribers. All delegates must create an account in MassPAT, according to instructions here. During enrollment, delegates must select prescribers who have enrolled in MassPAT for whom they will be a delegate.
Exceptions
to MassPAT requirements
- Hospice patients
- Emergency care where use of the PMP will likely result
in patient harm
- All inpatient services
- The provision of medication for immediate treatment
- Instances when it is not possible to use the PMP such
as when the system is down or where the prescriber is practicing at a site
outside their control without current access to the internet.
- Prescriptions for patients under the age of 96 months
- Prescribers with waivers
