CRDMS Scholarship Program Criteria

The Charles River District Medical Society Program is available to any medical school student enrolled at an approved US institution who is a legal resident of one of the five towns comprising the district: Needham, Newton, Waltham, Wellesley, and Weston. Applications must be received before December 31 of the sophomore or junior year. If the scholarship is awarded in the sophomore year it may be renewable for the junior year upon re-application and at the discretion of the Committee on Medical Education. The scholarship is awarded at the Charles River District Annual Meeting in April.

Requirements:

  1. A Curriculum vitae which must include: legal address, high school and date of graduation; medical school and expected date of graduation.
  2. A letter which includes a statement of personal goal.
  3. A copy of the Graduate and Professional School Financial Aid Service Form or a financial aid form of equivalent informational value (not the summary page). Financial information is expected to be comprehensive (this should include parents' resources).
  4. A letter from the financial aid officer of the medical school with detailed verification of financial need.
  5. A statement of academic standing from the medical school.
  6. A letter of recommendation from a district society member or a faculty member.

Dr. Leonard Freedberg honored by the Charles River District Medical Society as 2023 Community Clinician of the Year

Leonard Freedberg

Dr. Leonard Freedberg, a founding partner of Newton-Wellesley Psychiatry, has been selected as the Charles River District Medical Society’s 2023 Community Clinician of the Year.

Freedberg has been a psychiatrist at Newton-Wellesley Hospital for 40 years, and also worked at Westwood Lodge and McLean Hospital. He was a clinical instructor at Boston University School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School. He is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Medical School.

“Dr. Freedberg has been committed to treating the full range of psychiatric patients in our community for some 40 years, and he has been particularly committed to treating some of the sickest mentally ill patients in an effort to help them live meaningful lives,” said Dr. David Golden. “He has always been a strong patient advocate. He is a valued colleague. His efforts on behalf of his patients is a model for all of his colleagues.”

The Charles River District hosted its Scientific Meeting on Wednesday, January 25, 2023, at the Wellesley Country Club. The invited speaker was Cheryl Hamlin, MD. The title of Dr. Hamlin's talk was: "Abortion in a Changing Political Climate."


Members and their guests enjoyed themselves at the Charles River District Fall District Social at the Wellesley Country Club on September 14, 2022.


The Charles River District Medical Society presented a $3,000 check to the Weston Council on Aging as part of their ongoing community donation program which benefits the towns that comprise the Charles River District.
