Dr. Steven Keenholtz honored by Essex South District Medical Society with the 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award

Steven

Dr. Steven Keenholtz was honored with the 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award by Essex South District of the Massachusetts Medical Society. His career spanned 40 years. After finishing his fellowship in Infectious Diseases he opened a practice that was focused on primary care, specialty consultation, hospital epidemiology, and teaching the next generation of medical providers. He also worked closely with social service agencies, substance abuse providers, and Hospice of the North Shore to develop a fully integrated care network for patients and families.

Dr. Keenholtz was the first board certified Infectious Disease specialist to practice in Essex County. He was the Hospital Epidemiologist at Beverly Hospital, Hunt Memorial Hospital and J.B. Thomas Hospital. He joined the faculty of Harvard Medical School and served as a preceptor to 3rd year medical students as part of their Primary Care Clerkship. He served on the faculty of Tufts University School of Medicine and helped educate residents in the Beverly Hospital Family Practice Residency.

Within his practice Dr Keenholtz developed a Travel Medicine Clinic which offered preventative services to clients embarking on various journey whether for pleasure, education, business, medical emergencies, governmental work, and those visiting friends and relatives.

During his last 18 months in practice COVID 19 caused a shift from in person to remote platforms. He participated in the Beth Israel Lahey Health committee which developed the protocols to reopen primary care to in person visits 6 months before the vaccines were available.
